You Are God - An In-Depth Conversation with Dr. Wayne Dyer

You Are God

Dr. Wayne W. Dyer has been teaching people to live better lives for nearly 40 years. First coming from the perspective of a psychologist and then as a spiritual teacher, his books, recordings, and talks have influenced millions. After four decades, his core message has become incredibly simple and equally profound: You are the same as your Source. You are God. Because you come from God, you cannot be anything but God. All of Dr. Dyer’s current work boils down to helping people realize this fundamental truth and overcome obstacles to living lives that fully recognize it.
Dr. Dyer is the most popular teacher in the mind/body/spirit genre. He has written more than 30 books, and his National Public Television specials have raised more than $120 million for public television. The most recent vehicles of his teaching include the 2007 book Change Your Thoughts, Change Your Life: Living the Wisdom of the Tao, in which Dr. Dyer reflects upon the verses of the Tao Te Ching and their wisdom in living a life of balance and alignment with nature; his new bookExcuses Begone!, in which he examines how to overcome memes—the viral, self-defeating thinking habits that prevent you from living your life’s purpose; and the new feature film The Shift, which stars Dr. Dyer, Portia de Rossi, and Michael DeLuise in a spiritual movie about discovering that life purpose.
We sat down with Dr. Dyer in Tampa, Florida, and talked about current topics both metaphysical and mainstream, from the law of attraction to laws about gay marriage; from the impact of Lao-tzu to the impact of Barack Obama; and from how we are failing future generations to how we can best serve them.
Hemachandra: Starting with The Secret, which has reached such a wide audience, the emphasis in today’s popular understanding of the law of attraction is predominantly about material wealth. What are the consequences of that kind of skew to this teaching?
Dyer: First of all, I think the law of attraction has been misstated. You do not attract what you want. You attract what you are. That’s how the law of attraction works.
Twenty-five centuries ago in ancient China, Lao-tzu said there were four virtues. If you live them—if you live in a place of God-consciousness—the universe will give you God-consciousness. If you live in a place of ego-consciousness, though, the universe will give you more of that.
One virtue is reverence for all of life. You revere all life. You never kill, you never harm, you never wish harm, and you never have thoughts of harm directed toward yourself or others. Another virtue is natural sincerity, which is manifested as honesty. Just be honest with who you are. Don’t pretend to be something you’re not. Don’t be a phony. Walk your talk. That’s how God works, so doing it is emulating how Source works. The third virtue is gentleness, which manifests as kindness toward all others.
The fourth virtue, which is relevant here, is supportiveness. If you say to the universe, “Gimme, gimme, gimme,” which is what a lot of the work around the law of attraction says because of a misinterpretation, then the universe gives you back what you offered out. You get more “gimme, gimme, gimme.” “Gimme” means you don’t have enough. You have a shortage. The universe just keeps giving you more shortage because of what you’re thinking and saying.
If, on the other hand, you say to the universe again and again, “How may I serve? How may I serve? How may I serve?” and you live a life of constancy reflecting that principle, the universe will respond back, “How may I serve you?”
Hemachandra: With an approach centered on lack and need, even if you are getting things, the feeling of shortage keeps coming back to you. So no matter what you get, you still always feel the need, don’t you?
Dyer: Exactly, and that’s why I say you don’t get what you want, you get what you are. When you live the virtues—when you live in that place of God-consciousness—all these rules we have about cause and effect, beginnings and ends, don’t have any impact or relevance. As Joel Goldsmith said, in the presence of the God realized, the laws of the material world do not apply.
That’s why people who live steadfastly at a place of God-consciousness can perform miracles. They can create. They can make virtually anything happen. From the space in-between, that last inch is the critical inch you have to take to reach that place. Every once in a while, I get to that place of God-consciousness, and miracles do happen.

I'm doing nothing and that is a refreshing change

are here

By Rachelle Williams

“Doing nothing is better than being busy doing nothing.” –Lao Tzu

A visit to Italy will soon have you embracing the concept of dolce far niente or “sweetness of doing nothing.” It does not mean being lazy; instead, it’s the idea of finding pleasure in idleness or relaxation. It is the ability to savor an experience, relishing the feeling of wholeness as it fills what is empty. This is a different sort of doing nothing, much more than laying around and wasting time. It offers the opportunity to be in the moment in whatever way you choose and, in the process, improve your life in surprising ways.

Think about the last time you did something only because it pleased you, not because it was expected. This is what makes it so sweet, and such a gift. Society has shifted toward prioritizing hyper-productivity, making the notion of doing nothing seem unproductive and inefficient. If there is time left unfilled during the day, there is an urge to fill it with something. It’s no wonder people have such a hard time relaxing and enjoying moments of nothingness.

If the idea of spending time relaxing and doing nothing is uncomfortable, you are not alone. This is a skill you may have lost touch with but can be reacquired with a bit of practice. The potential is there within you (you had it as a kid) so give yourself permission to at least give it a try.
The Deeper Meaning

For Italians, dolce far niente is a part of everyday life, and they do it well. It is observed in families taking a stroll together, sipping wine with friends at a café, enjoying good coffee, and watching the passersby. Noticeably, there is a feeling of presence and truly enjoying the moment as it is. It is simple and pure. Doing nothing can be an event in itself!

It serves an important purpose as well, probably unwittingly to most, in that it provides a sense of connection, not only to each other but with yourself. As a result, you end up gaining greater clarity about what is important to you at your core. This is a stimulating, always on-the-go society and it has become the default form of living, especially in the West. There is so much pressure to perform and meet expectations, creating a treadmill of stressful activity day after day.

Somewhere along the way society gave up on notions such as relaxation, idleness, and living in the moment as an important part of daily life. Having periods of time with little activity has always been a part of life and was assuredly accepted and enjoyed by your ancestors in a way that has been long forgotten. It never had to be defined, until now. It is easy to be consumed by should’s and must’s. It is easy to forget some of your most basic needs and, along with them, the most basic ways of fulfilling them.

The Importance of Relaxation

With the mindfulness movement, the notion of dolce far niente isn’t as far-fetched as you may have thought. There is something to be said about sitting down and pressing pause on your life from time to time, giving yourself space to take a deep breath and simply be. Mindfulness practices such as meditation, yoga, or nature walks create the space to not only experience—but recognize—life’s sweet moments. The turbulence you and many others feel within can be likened to mud that has been stirred so much it’s hard to see through to what is possible, but it can be settled during moments of quiet.

Start to think of your time spent in solitude or engaging in a relaxing activity as an investment in your health, longevity, and well-being. The belief of not having enough time in the day is a myth that can be unraveled. Everyone has the same amount of time in a day; start to be aware of what consumes your time.

Contrary to what you might think, being too busy can be counterproductive. Think of a washing machine that is crammed with too many clothes. Not much actual washing takes place because there is not enough space to move and churn. This same concept applies to life in general; you can use a little more space to help connect to the pulse of life and enjoy the pleasures it has to offer, no matter how small.

Here are a few of the benefits you may experience from incorporating more relaxing or pleasurable “doing nothing” moments into your days:
Restorative—both mentally and physically
Grounding
Improves relationships
Relieves stress
More productive
Connects you with your intuition
Boosts creativity
Allows time for reflection
Helps to process ideas and information

The Art of Relaxation

Initially, trying to sit down and relax can be overwhelming—like opening the floodgates. Your nervous system may have been over-stimulated for so long that it might have a hard time recalibrating and adjusting to this newfound activity. You can’t expect to be going a mile a minute and then be able to stop without allowing some transition time. Be gentle on yourself and patient and start by doing small nothings at first. You may need to give your body and mind a little time to adjust and learn the importance of doing nothing.

Quick Practice Exercise
Set aside 5–10 minutes of time at home or someplace quiet where you feel calm and comfortable. Turn off all distractions and let people know not to disturb you. Try placing your phone in a different room from the one you are in as this is a powerful distraction.

Now, close your eyes—or you can choose not to, do what feels comfortable—and then simply do nothing, whatever that means to you. The idea is that if someone were to call and ask what you were up to in that moment, you would say, legitimately, “nothing.”

After 5–10 minutes, stop and observe how you feel. Was it uncomfortable? Was it relaxing? There will be many feelings and thoughts that arise, just observe them all without judgment. This is a starting point to help you test the waters and begin tapping into your inner world where your needs and desires lie. You will find it requires a bit of practice at first. Try doing this each day for a couple weeks, put it in your calendar, and see how it evolves and what begins to emerge.

There are many ways to engage in idle activity; it’s an art that you will refine over time. If you need some ideas here are some creative ways to spend time enjoying the sweetness of doing nothing:
  • Take an epsom salt bath.
  • Disconnect from technology for a day.
  • Read a good book.
  • Perform breathing exercises.
  • Have a day of rest.
  • Watch your children play.
  • Take time to smell the roses (of course!).
  • Discover your inner artist.
  • Give someone a hug.
  • Take an afternoon nap.
  • Watch the sunset or stare at the stars at night.
  • Have dinner with a dear friend or loved one.
  • Enjoy your food.
  • Take a walk in nature.
  • Meditate.

The options are endless. You might look at this list and think you are not necessarily doing nothing, you are always doing something. Remember, the idea is to find pleasure in moments of idleness or relaxation. Enjoy those moments where you heart is full and you feel lighter as your burdens are uplifted, even if it’s just during that time. You are giving yourself the space to think and feel deeply in a way that can’t happen when consumed by the busyness of your daily activities.

You don’t need to go to Italy to experience dolce far niente. It’s time to relax and reclaim that part of yourself. You were given the ability to feel and experience life in a complicated, often messy, but always beautiful way. Take advantage of the gift of pure pleasure you were given—life is short! What will you do today to start re-discovering the sweetness of doing nothing?

In the beginning...

It's an adventure story and this is how it began.

The Genesis File

Today you are creating a new day.  Reality springs forth from your consciousness.  The reality you dream into being blends with those dreams of all the other divine beings you are sharing this physical space with at this moment in time to create a world that has never been before.

What's the Story?

I recently presented a program on life goals and dreams for a bunch of middle and high school students in Coral Springs, Florida - Project Leadership 22.  This is a great program established by Scott Brook, family law attorney and former Mayor of Coral Springs.  Over the years, Scott and other mentor volunteers of which I am very pleased to be one have hoped to inspire and encourage hundreds of middle and high school students refine their personal goals and give them knowledge that may be missing from the traditional classroom.

Here is a link to the material covered in my part to yesterday’s session: http://previewnet.com/positivibes/Who.pdf

Now for my story – each of the students were given the assignment to write an autobiography of their lives 5-10 years from now.  They were to state what they really wanted ignoring any perceived obstacles or “realities”.  So, I thought I should practice what I preach and tell you my story – we are in this adventure together so it is appropriate that I let you know what is happening.

It’s July 16, 2020, a day before another birthday with a number attached to it that is inconceivable to me.  The reason it is inconceivable is because we have be taught so much about what happens as you get older and I happily have never bought into the “reality” that most people seem willing to accept.  My parents both lived more than 25 years past the mark I am about to hit and did in quite good health up until very close to when they decided to exit the stage.  A big part of it is they both filled their lives with love and thanksgiving AND positive expectation.  They never stopped looking for new things to do and experience.  They never thought they were done.  Those really are the secrets to happy healthy living.  I guess I am lucky to have had such good examples to live by.

For me, the thing that fills me with energy and “life” is the excitement of helping other people have more fun and happiness in their lives.  All it takes is a shift in perspective – a reevaluation of the nature of Reality.  It started for me really back in my teen years when I first realized how easily your personal “reality” could be altered.  Over the years it became very obvious that there were as many “realities” as there were people and most everyone totally believed their version was the accurate one.  At first in defending your own version, you think, they can’t all be right.  Then came the revelation:  they were ALL exactly accurate regardless of how different each person’s perspectives on life are.  How can this be?  It is because REALITY is totally the invention of consciousness and we each have an individual consciousness even though we are all linked as parts of an unbounded energy field that is the source of manifesting all the physical realities we imagine into being.

For a world of individuals believing in separation, this was all a bit hard to grasp but with the ongoing evolution of consciousness on a planetary level, the ideas began to become more prevalent.  It all became very clear to me probably a decade ago after absorbing ideas from people live Richard Bach who wrote one of my all time favorite books, “Illusions”, the story of a reluctant messiah who we get to spend time with as he flies around the country side from small town to small town in a small airplane.  His message is very much the same as other messiahs and just as often misunderstood.  Here’s the bottom line that I came to believe very firmly:  whatever you believe to be reality IS reality because your consciousness is the creator of your personal reality.  Of course it is going to be similar to the reality of others in most cases because few of us can or would want to totally insulate ourselves from all of the beliefs of others, after all, we do all have to try and live together – we all are connected and affect each other.

The secret is THE CHOICE IS TOTALLY OURS.  We can pick and choose what parts of the collective perception of reality we want to be a part of shaping our life.  It’s all make believe.  None of it has any real substance except what we attribute to it.  Everything is in your imagination.  This is why statements like “knock and the door will be opened” or “ask and you will receive” have been some of the most misunderstood messiah messages ever.  All you have to do is substitute the word BELIEVE for “knock” and “ask” and the message becomes much clearer.  That’s all it takes.  Imagine what you want… believe it is coming to you… know what it looks and feels like with no doubt about its REALITY even before it has become part of your physical reality and nothing can keep it from materializing into your world.  For many people that is still just not reality in fact plenty of people think that concept is flat out delusional and maybe even crazy dangerous.

Anyway, those ideas resulted in my first book some years back.  It originally was called “Transforming Reality”.  Then it became “Finding the Path of Least Resistance at The Cutting Edge of Reality” – I guess I really got that from my appreciation of the ideas coming through the Abraham-Hicks materials (which I definitely recommend for any life adventurer).  Finally it became “The Designer of Reality Guidebook™”.  That has set the course for me.  It has become my passion to help people realize they can do anything they want in their lives.  To let them know no one is judging them and they can’t get it wrong but they can constantly become more accomplished creators of exactly the reality they want for themselves.

My courses, that have become hugely popular, all deal with becoming a kind of modern day wizard actively shaping all the experiences of their lives in line with what they want to experience.  I have promoted the concept of considering yourself and adventurer designing and creating an ever more loving and enjoyable environment.  The adventurer part is key because you are not always going to get things right immediately.  You are constantly learning new things and finding more things that you want to be different than they currently appear.  The fun and satisfaction comes from imagining improved realities and then learning to believe them into physical form.  The obstacles and challenges will always be there to some degree because those are the essential sign posts helping you define the path toward the constant refinement and enhancement of your story.

For me personally, this has all been a dream come true over and over again.  My life has been filled with so many great adventures and they keep getting better.  You cannot find anything more satisfying to do than something that helps others have more satisfying lives and adds more love and joy to the world.  I get to travel all over the world to share these ideas with people spreading joy and prosperity everywhere I go.   I have always loved traveling so to be able to go so many great places and get paid to do it is truly a dream come true.  And, of course that’s my message: Make all your dreams come true!  Why not?  It’s totally up to you if you are willing to believe it.

So what else is in store?  A couple more books are in the works and maybe a movie that will expand on the idea that we are all playing a virtual reality game as an avatar for our Soul Self.  Besides being what I think is a fascinating concept to see take form on a movie that would be actually a reflection of what actually happens in each of our lives as we write and direct our own adventures.

I also want to touch on my involvement with “Playing For Change”.  People familiar with my personal story will know how important music has always been and particularly live music presentations.  Some years ago I fortunately discovered Playing for Change.  This organization has a mission of adding wellbeing, joy and love and hope to the world through music.  This is truly a merging of my passions.  The joy of music directly used to create improved visions of reality.  I look forward to doing all I can to support and extend that mission as it is exactly what I want to be the result of all of the seeds I want to plant wherever I can find ground ready to receive them.

The evolution of consciousness is ongoing and unstoppable.  My heart and Spirit are constantly uplifted and energized as more and more people realize they are the designers of their reality and we all can have a lot of fun helping move everyone toward an ever improved and harmonious reality.

The best advice you can have for successful living!

Here is one of the many uplifting and love filled productions from Playing For Change (an organization I would encourage you to lend your support to).

And, the message is the best advice you can get for successful living!

Designer of Reality

We are all designers of reality.  We either do it by intention or default - for most of us, it is a haphazard mix of default and intention.  That is what we want to get people to work on fixing.  The secret to having a lot of fun in life is learning to take more and more control over the life you are creating for yourself.

It all starts with a good story.  Emphasize the word GOOD.  Too many people cast themselves in a difficult drama or even a really sad story.  We are here to tell the world that it is not necessary.  Life is not supposed to be hard.  You don't deserve problems - they are only there if you need them to find out where you really want to go or who you really want to be.  The missing piece of the puzzle for most people is they just don't accept or even suspect that they are in full control of everything that happens in their life.  Now you may be quick to say that is crazy - there are simply too many moving parts for me to be in complete control.  Wrong.  And, as we already mentioned you already are running the show - either by default or intention or the very common blended variety.

Anyway, that's it.  Helping you and me write more enjoyable stories for our lives once we realize we can never be a victim or have a bad outcome to anything unless we have allowed it to be.  Clearly the first part is getting people to accept they are totally in control of their personal reality.  Lot's of people, maybe even you believe reality to be too big for you to handle let alone control.  To get started see if you can get comfortable with the idea that while it is influenced by everyone else, your reality is unique to you and may be dramatically different than what someone in your family or Joe Anyone on the street experiences.  You already know you sure don't agree on everything and they are just as sure they are right as you are - so that's a start.

Iran Deal and the Evil Men Do

This is an ideal example of how different people are working to design Reality.  A couple of years of talking has lead to an agreement intended to take Iran off a path leading to nuclear bomb capability.  It has been a very difficult negotiation because on the International stage, no one must look like a loser.  National pride can trump common sense any time.  But, alas, withstanding numerous delays and breaks in the talks, a deal has been made.

This is when we find out what people's true motivations are:  what they really want.  We have (hopefully) the larger group of influencers who are filled with hope and optimism that the deal has given us a path to a more peaceful and prosperous future for all.  That is very definitely the intention of the agreement.  That is the story line that has been set in motion and those filled with hope and optimism and even great relief BELIEVE in that story line as a picture of the future.  Here is the part that most people don't appreciate or realize:  if the predominant belief on the world stage is that this positive more unified and orderly vision of what is going to happen is what is really going to happen, there is no chance for any other result to materialize in our Reality.  Those dreaming this reality into our physical space want peace and literally are the peacemakers.

Then we have the doubters and the fear mongers.  They may not actually be bad people.  They may just be sadly deceived and unaware of how things actually work in this adventure story we are all a part of.  After all, how many of us often find ourselves fearing outcomes we don't want in our day to day lives.  We forget that whatever belief we put our attention on is energized and if we focus enough energy in that direction it will with certainty become our personal reality.  On a personal level it is not a big deal because we can only create problems for ourselves.  On the world stage, negative fearful talk actually poses a danger to the well being of the planet.  The conservative often zealously "religious" politicians in our land have welcomed the devil into their details.  The current leader of Israel has put himself very clearly on the side of death and destruction - he may not really want peace because like so many misguided leaders he may well believe his strength relies on having an evil enemy to fight.  The truth is that he is perpetuating and, in fact, has made himself a primary force empowering the force that he is so adamantly against.  Fight fire with fire, you just get more fire.  A belief in and hope for PEACE and mutual respect (or we could start with just tolerance even if the respect part is a ways off) is the water on the fire that can put it out and eventually wash away the hate and anger of the past.

In case you didn't quite get the point here, let me be very clear.  Those who are making statements like "this deal is a death sentence for Israel" or "this is going to lead to the third world war" are speaking "evil".  Not only is their thinking taking them down a personal path that sure seems undesirable, they are trying to instill fear and horror into the minds of others.  Here is why that is EVIL - really misguided and bad for our well being - these individuals are in very insistent language backed by the power of emotion writing a story of the future that is certainly not in the best interest of a loving and joyful world.  Even if you are not ready to accept that predominant beliefs control the reality of Reality, on a common sense level I think you can accept that if enough people are claiming something is really dangerous and needs to be destroyed, the odds start to be pretty good that action is going to be taken regardless of whether the horrible thing is true or not.  While the fear mongers may believe they are well intentioned they really are doing the Devil's work.  Belief controls reality and these "well meaning" individuals are trying to get everyone to believe in a future we really don't want.  Let's all insist that they start working and praying for peace and tolerance and not the opposite.
